Guidance Documents
Compliance Guidance Documents and Whitepapers
In-depth guides on specific regulatory regimes, product categories, and compliance topics, written by ORBIS legal and engineering professionals for teams getting products approved worldwide.
The long form
When a topic deserves more than a news item and less than a consulting engagement.
Some regulatory topics can't be covered in a paragraph. How QR-code certificate mandates work and what they mean for a manufacturer's approvals. How to enter a Latin American market with a connected product. What the EU Battery Regulation requires, by category and by date. How modular radio approval works across markets. How to build a producer responsibility program across a dozen countries. These deserve a proper guide: structured, sourced, and written by people who do the work.
ORBIS guidance documents and whitepapers are that long form. Each takes one regime, product category, or compliance topic and works through it: the regulatory background, the requirements, how they're applied in practice, where teams go wrong, and what a good approach looks like. They're written for the compliance manager who needs to understand a topic well enough to make a plan and the engineer or product manager who needs to understand it well enough to make a design decision.
The current collection is at whitepapers. New documents are announced in the newsletter.
Topics
The kinds of guide in the collection
Regime guides
A single regulatory framework explained end to end: scope, requirements, conformity route, documentation, enforcement, and the changes underway.
Market entry guides
What it takes to bring a product category into a specific country or region: approvals, local representation, labeling, and the usual surprises.
Product category guides
The full regulatory set for a product type across markets, from a wireless consumer device to an industrial battery system.
Topic guides
Cross-cutting compliance topics: modular approval, evidence reuse, change control, supplier declarations, and running compliance as a planning function.
Regulatory change briefings
Deeper treatment of a major change than a news item allows, with impact by product category and a timeline for action.
Risk briefings
The cost of acting on the wrong regulatory answer, with anonymized examples and a method for verifying before you commit.
How they're written
By practitioners, against the source, with the practical parts left in.
A guidance document from ORBIS is written by the legal and engineering professionals who handle that regime or product category for clients. That shows in the content: the parts of a requirement that regulators actually enforce, the interpretation questions that come up, the places where laboratories and certification bodies disagree, and what we've learned from engaging authorities directly. The regulatory text is the foundation. The practice is what makes the guide useful.
Every document is dated and cites its sources. Where a position is still forming, such as a regulation in transition or an enforcement practice that's developing, the guide says so. Where we know a significant change has occurred since publication, the listing notes it and points to the update.
Guidance documents are general by design. They explain the regime; they don't apply it to your product. For that, the next step is a pre-compliance assessment or a regulatory consulting engagement.

Tell us the regime, market, or product category you'd like covered properly. The topics we hear most often are the ones we write.
Read the guide. Then bring the product.
Guidance documents explain how a regime works. A discussion with our team explains how it applies to what you're shipping.
