Commercial Certificates, including Mexico NOM-024
NOM-024-SCFI commercial information certification for electronic, electrical, and household appliance products imported into Mexico. Labeling, instructions, and warranty compliance, coordinated with accredited bodies.
What NOM-024 covers
Mexico regulates what you tell the consumer, not only how the product performs.
NOM-024-SCFI is the Mexican Official Standard for commercial information on electronic, electrical, and household appliance products. It governs what must appear on the product's packaging and labels, what the instructions and warranty must contain, and the Spanish-language requirements for all of it. Compliance is verified by accredited certification bodies, and the resulting certificate is one of the documents Mexican customs checks before releasing a shipment.
It sits alongside the product safety NOMs that many of the same products need, such as NOM-001-SCFI for electronic equipment, NOM-003-SCFI for electrical products, and NOM-019-SCFI for information technology equipment. A product often needs both a safety NOM certificate and a NOM-024 commercial information certificate, and the two are frequently confused, ordered separately, or assumed to be covered by each other.
ORBIS Compliance manages NOM-024 certification as part of our Product Certification service, coordinating with accredited Mexican certification bodies and aligning the commercial file with the safety, energy efficiency, and telecom approvals the same product needs in Mexico.
What the standard looks at
The elements a NOM-024 evaluation checks.
- Product name, brand, model, and the identity of the manufacturer or importer in Spanish.
- Country of origin, electrical ratings, and contents or quantity declarations.
- Warnings, precautions, and safe-use information presented in Spanish.
- Instructions for use, installation, and maintenance in Spanish, in the required form.
- Warranty terms that meet Mexican consumer protection requirements, including how to make a claim.
- Placement, legibility, and permanence of the information on packaging, labels, and inserts.
Why it goes wrong
It's a labeling standard, so it gets handed to the wrong team last.
Commercial information requirements look administrative, and they often reach the marketing or packaging team a few weeks before shipment. By then the packaging is printed, the manual is translated by someone who didn't know the standard, and the warranty is a copy of the US version. The certification body issues findings, the shipment waits, and the compliance manager explains to sales why a labeling rule stopped a launch.
The other common failure is treating the safety NOM certificate as if it covers commercial information, or the other way around. They're separate standards with separate evaluations. A product can be perfectly safe and still be held at customs because the packaging doesn't carry the right declarations in Spanish.
ORBIS brings NOM-024 into the product's compliance plan from the pre-compliance assessment, so labels, instructions, and warranties are designed to the standard rather than corrected after printing.
How ORBIS handles it
From artwork review to certificate
- 1
Confirm scope
We verify the product falls under NOM-024 and identify the other Mexican NOMs and approvals it needs, so nothing is ordered twice or missed.
- 2
Review the commercial file
Packaging artwork, labels, instructions, and warranty text are reviewed against the standard before printing, with corrections marked in Spanish.
- 3
Certify
The file is submitted to an accredited certification body, with any evaluation or verification coordinated by ORBIS and status visible in ORBIS Intelligent Compliance.
- 4
Maintain
Certificate validity, model additions, and artwork changes are tracked so the commercial certificate stays aligned with what's actually shipping.
Questions
Mexico NOM-024
Which products need a NOM-024 certificate?
+
Electronic, electrical, and household appliance products sold to consumers in Mexico, with specific inclusions and exclusions defined in the standard. Products sold only to industrial or professional users may fall outside it. ORBIS confirms applicability for your specific product before you commit to certification.
Can our distributor handle NOM-024 on our behalf?
+
An importer can hold the certificate, but that ties your ability to ship to that relationship. Many manufacturers prefer to manage Mexican certifications directly or through an independent representative so a change of distributor doesn't interrupt supply.
How does NOM-024 relate to the safety NOM certificate?
+
They're separate. The safety NOM covers electrical safety and is issued after testing. NOM-024 covers the commercial information on packaging, labels, instructions, and warranties. Most consumer electrical products need both to clear customs.
Clear Mexican customs with the right NOM file.
Bring the product, its packaging, its user documentation, and your other Mexican certifications. We'll confirm whether NOM-024 applies, what the label and instructions need, and how the commercial certificate fits with the safety NOMs.
