Energy and Electrical Product Compliance

Safety, energy efficiency, EMC, battery, and market approvals for batteries and energy storage, electrical equipment, lighting, appliances and HVAC, and energy products across global markets.

The sector

Electrical products are regulated for safety everywhere, for efficiency almost everywhere, and for batteries in a growing number of places.

Products that connect to the grid, store energy, or convert it face a regulatory set that's broad, well established, and actively changing. Electrical safety certification under IEC standards and national marks is the foundation, and nearly every market requires it. Energy efficiency regulation has expanded from a few appliance categories to lighting, motors, power supplies, HVAC, and electronics, with minimum performance standards, labels, and registration databases that tighten on published schedules. EMC applies to everything with electronics. And batteries, present in more electrical products every year, bring their own safety, transport, and producer regulation, now expanding under the EU Battery Regulation and national laws.

The sector is also where national certification schemes are most prevalent. Many markets require their own electrical safety mark with local testing or factory inspection, in addition to or instead of accepting international certificates. Energy efficiency registration is national. Grid connection rules for energy products are national and sometimes regional. A manufacturer of electrical equipment selling globally manages more mandatory national schemes than almost any other sector.

ORBIS Compliance works with energy and electrical product manufacturers across that set: scoping safety, efficiency, EMC, and battery requirements per market, coordinating testing and certification with the recognized bodies, managing registrations and local representation, and keeping certificates and efficiency declarations current as thresholds move.

Product categories

Energy and electrical categories we support

  • Batteries & Energy Storage

Cells, packs, stationary storage, and battery-powered products under safety, transport, grid, and producer regulation, including the EU Battery Regulation.

  • Electrical Equipment

Power supplies, distribution, switchgear, cables, motors, and industrial electrical products under safety, EMC, efficiency, and national certification schemes.

  • Lighting

Luminaires, lamps, drivers, and controls under safety, EMC, energy efficiency and labeling, photobiological safety, and substance rules.

  • Appliances & HVAC

Household and commercial appliances, heat pumps, air conditioning, and refrigeration under IEC 60335 safety, efficiency labeling, refrigerant, and noise rules.

  • Energy Products

Solar inverters and modules, chargers, generators, and grid-connected equipment under safety, grid connection, efficiency, and national utility requirements.

The common thread

National marks, national registrations, and thresholds that move.

Electrical compliance is where one international test program has to serve the most national certificates, and where a product that was compliant at launch most often falls behind a revised efficiency tier.

How ORBIS is involved

One test program, many national certificates, and monitoring for the thresholds that change.

ORBIS scopes electrical safety testing to the IEC standard with the national deviations of every target market, so CB Scheme reports carry into as many national certifications as possible, and coordinates local testing and factory inspection where markets require them. EMC and energy efficiency are scoped in the same program, with efficiency registrations and labels managed per market.

For battery-containing products, the battery safety and transport certification and the battery producer program run alongside. For all electrical products, WEEE and packaging producer obligations are handled through our environmental practice.

Certificates, registrations, and efficiency declarations live in ORBIS Intelligent Compliance with their validity and change triggers. Through ongoing compliance, scheduled efficiency tier changes and standard revisions surface against your portfolio with time to act.

Questions

Energy and electrical compliance

Can one safety test report serve all our national certifications?

+

A CB Scheme report to the IEC standard with national deviations included serves many, and it's the most efficient starting point. Some markets still require local testing, factory inspection, or specific national requirements. ORBIS designs the program around your market list so the report carries as far as it can.

How often do energy efficiency requirements change?

+

Constantly across the major markets. New tiers, new product categories, and revised test methods arrive on published schedules, typically with a year or more of notice. That's enough time to adapt if someone is tracking them against your products, which is what ORBIS Intelligent Compliance does.

Do batteries in our products need separate certification from the product?

+

Yes. Cells and packs need their own safety certification and UN 38.3 transport testing, and battery producer obligations apply in each market of sale independent of the product's WEEE obligations. Battery regulation is expanding quickly. See our batteries and energy storage page.
