Energy Product Compliance: Solar, Inverters, Chargers, and Grid Equipment

Safety, grid connection, efficiency, and national utility approvals for solar modules and inverters, EV charging equipment, generators, and grid-connected energy products across markets with their own interconnection rules.

The category

Energy products connect to the grid, and the grid has its own regulators.

The regulatory picture

Product safety plus grid connection plus national energy policy, market by market.

Solar photovoltaic modules and inverters, EV charging equipment, generators and gensets, power conversion equipment, and grid-connected storage systems are regulated as electrical products and as grid participants. The product regulation is familiar: electrical safety under IEC 62109 for inverters, IEC 61730 and IEC 61215 for PV modules, IEC 61851 for EV chargers, and national marks. The grid dimension is different. Utilities and energy regulators set interconnection requirements for anything that feeds power to or draws significant power from the grid: anti-islanding, power quality, frequency and voltage response, and communication requirements that differ by country, by region, and sometimes by utility. Certification to the local grid code is a condition of connection, and without it a compliant product can't be installed.

Energy policy adds another layer. Incentive schemes and procurement rules often require products to be listed or certified under national programs. Efficiency requirements apply to inverters, chargers, and power conversion equipment. Cybersecurity requirements are arriving for grid-connected devices. And energy products with radios for monitoring and control need radio approval in every market.

ORBIS Compliance works with energy product manufacturers on the product certifications, the grid connection certifications each market requires, the national program listings that unlock incentives and procurement, and the radio, efficiency, and cyber requirements connected energy products carry.

Product types

Energy products we support

  • Solar inverters and power electronics

String, central, micro, and hybrid inverters under IEC 62109, grid codes such as VDE, G98/G99, IEEE 1547 and UL 1741, and national listings.

  • PV modules and mounting

Modules under IEC 61215 and IEC 61730, with national certification and listing programs, plus fire and mounting requirements per market.

  • EV charging equipment

AC and DC chargers under IEC 61851, IEC 62196, UL 2202 and 2594, grid rules, payment and accessibility requirements, and connectivity approvals.

  • Generators and gensets

Portable and stationary generators under electrical safety, engine emissions, noise, and fuel system rules across markets.

  • Energy storage systems

Battery storage under safety, grid connection, fire code, and battery regulation. See batteries and energy storage.

  • Grid and metering equipment

Smart meters, gateways, and grid-edge devices under electrical safety, legal metrology, radio, and utility approval schemes.

Grid connection

The grid code is national, sometimes regional, and often utility-specific.

Grid interconnection requirements determine how a product must behave when connected: how it responds to voltage and frequency deviations, how quickly it disconnects on grid loss, what power quality it maintains, and increasingly how it communicates with the grid operator. Europe has national grid codes with country-specific certification. North America works through IEEE 1547 and UL 1741 with utility-level requirements on top. Australia has AS/NZS 4777 with a national inverter listing. Many other markets have their own codes and approval processes, and they're revised as grids absorb more distributed generation and storage.

For a manufacturer, this means grid certification per market on top of product safety certification, with testing to each code's requirements and often listing with a national body or utility register. Firmware that controls grid behavior is under change control by the certification, and updates can require re-certification.

ORBIS maps grid connection requirements per market, coordinates testing and certification with recognized bodies, manages national listings, and tracks the grid code revisions and firmware change conditions in ORBIS Intelligent Compliance.

EV charging

Chargers face the electrical rules, the grid rules, and the rules of the site they're installed at.

EV charging equipment is certified for electrical safety and EMC, subject to grid connection and metering rules that vary by market, and for public charging, increasingly regulated for payment methods, accessibility, open communication protocols, and uptime. Smart chargers add radio approval and cybersecurity requirements. Several markets have specific charging equipment regulations that layer national requirements on the international standards.

ORBIS scopes the full set per market, and through law impact analysis tracks the rapidly developing charging regulation that affects products with long installed lives.

Questions

Energy product compliance

Our inverter is certified to IEC 62109. Can it be installed anywhere?

+

No. IEC 62109 covers product safety. Grid connection requires certification to each market's grid code and, in many markets, listing with a national body or utility. Without it, installers and utilities won't connect the product. ORBIS maps the grid certifications your target markets require.

How do firmware updates affect grid certification?

+

Firmware that controls grid-interactive behavior is typically covered by the grid certification, and changes may require assessment or re-certification depending on the code and the change. Managing that process, and knowing which updates trigger it in which markets, is part of keeping the certification valid.

What national program listings matter for solar products?

+

Many markets tie incentives, procurement eligibility, or installation approval to product listings maintained by national energy agencies or certification bodies. Requirements and processes differ by country. ORBIS identifies the listings relevant to your products and markets and manages the applications.
