Medical Electronics and Component Compliance
Certification for medical-grade power supplies, modules, displays, and electronic sub-assemblies, designed so the medical devices built on them meet IEC 60601 and reach registration faster in every market.
The position
A medical device's IEC 60601 file is built on its components. The component maker who understands that wins the design.
The category
Medical electronics are certified so the device evaluation can rely on them.
Medical-grade power supplies, isolation components, radio modules, displays, embedded computing modules, motor controllers, sensors, and electronic sub-assemblies are designed into medical devices that will be evaluated under IEC 60601-1 and registered with health authorities worldwide. The device evaluation looks at means of protection, leakage currents, isolation, and risk management across the whole system, and it relies heavily on the evidence the components bring. A power supply certified to IEC 60601-1 with defined means of patient protection saves the device manufacturer an evaluation. A module without medical evidence adds one.
For component manufacturers, this makes the compliance file part of the product. Medical device makers choose components partly on the strength and breadth of their certification: which edition of IEC 60601-1, which national deviations, what isolation and leakage performance, what conditions of acceptability, and whether the certifying body is recognized in the markets the device will enter. Radio modules add modular approval status and integration conditions. Batteries add their medical-context safety and transport evidence.
ORBIS Compliance works with medical electronics manufacturers to certify components for the widest useful acceptance, and with device manufacturers to build and maintain the critical component evidence their IEC 60601 files and registrations depend on.
Component types
Medical electronics we support
Medical-grade power supplies
External and internal supplies certified to IEC 60601-1 with defined means of protection, plus energy efficiency and national electrical requirements.
Isolation and interface components
Transformers, isolators, and patient-connection interfaces evaluated for the isolation and leakage performance the device file will cite.
Radio modules for medical devices
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, and medical-band modules with modular approvals and integration conditions suited to medical hosts, including body-worn RF exposure considerations.
Displays and computing modules
Medical-grade displays, single-board computers, and embedded modules with safety, EMC, and software evidence device makers can reference.
Batteries for medical devices
Cells and packs certified for medical applications, with transport documentation and the producer obligations that follow the battery into the device.
Sub-assemblies and OEM modules
Pumps, motor drives, sensor modules, and other sub-systems evaluated as components of medical electrical equipment.
Designing for the device file
Certify the component the way the device evaluator will read it.
A component certificate is useful to a medical device manufacturer when it answers the questions their IEC 60601 evaluation will ask: means of operator and patient protection, isolation voltages and creepage, leakage currents, temperature limits, applicable edition and deviations, and conditions of acceptability. It's more useful when it covers the range of uses their devices span, and when the certifying body is recognized where the devices will be registered.
ORBIS designs component certification with those questions and that range in view. For radio modules, we design the modular approval so medical hosts, often body-worn or patient-adjacent, can integrate within the grant. For power supplies, we address IEC 60601-1 and the energy and national electrical requirements together so one certificate serves the medical and the general electrical file.
For device manufacturers, ORBIS maintains the critical component list behind each IEC 60601 evaluation and each registration in ORBIS Intelligent Compliance. Supplier certificates can be contributed to ORBIS Cloud with authorized access. When purchasing proposes a substitution, the affected evaluations and registrations are visible and the assessment is fast.
Questions
Medical electronics compliance
Does a medical-grade power supply need certification beyond IEC 60601-1?
+
Often, yes. Energy efficiency requirements apply to external power supplies in most markets regardless of medical use. Some countries require national electrical certification of power supplies. And the supply's substance and producer obligations apply as for any electronic component. ORBIS scopes the full set.
Can a general IT power supply be used in a medical device?
+
Sometimes, if the device evaluation can establish the required means of protection through other means, but it typically adds evaluation burden and constrains the design. A supply certified to IEC 60601-1 is the path of least resistance for the device maker, which is why it's a commercial advantage for the component maker.
How do component changes affect our customers' medical registrations?
+
A change to a certified component can be a significant change for the device's IEC 60601 evaluation and its health authority registrations, depending on what changed. Notifying customers and certification bodies before the change ships, with an assessment, is both good practice and often a certification requirement. ORBIS manages that process for component manufacturers.
Make your component the one medical device makers design in.
Bring the component, its medical-grade claims, and the markets your device customers sell into. We'll design certification that gives them the evidence they need and gives you an advantage.
